How to Get Your Business Found Online Without Wasting Money

A practical guide to the three essential steps that actually get local customers searching for your business.

How to Get Your Business Found Online Without Wasting Money

You're running a good business. You show up, do good work, and your customers trust you. But here's the problem: they can only refer you to people they know. If someone new to town needs a dentist or contractor at 9 p.m., they're searching Google—not asking around. You need to be findable online.

The good news? You don't need to understand digital marketing to do this. You just need to do three specific things.

1. Claim and Fill Out Your Google Business Profile

This is the single most important step. When someone searches "dentist near me" or "med spa in [your city]," Google shows a map with business listings. If you're not there, you're invisible.

What to do:

  • Go to google.com/business
  • Search for your business name
  • If it exists but you don't own it, click "Manage this business"
  • If it doesn't exist, create it
  • Fill in every field completely: hours, phone number, address, services you offer, photos
  • Add recent photos of your business, your team, and your work (if appropriate)
  • Make sure your phone number and address are exactly correct—one typo means customers can't reach you

This takes about 30 minutes and costs nothing. It's also where most of your "near me" searches will come from.

2. Ask Your Happy Customers for Reviews

Google shows reviews right below your business information. A business with 20 four-star reviews beats one with zero reviews, even if the zero-review business is technically better.

This isn't about gaming the system. It's about showing new customers that you do what you say you do.

What to do:

  • After a successful appointment or project, ask the customer directly: "Would you mind leaving a review on Google? It really helps us."
  • Make it easy: text them a link or put a QR code in your office
  • Do this today with your last 10 customers
  • Keep asking going forward—aim for one new review per week

Don't ask for five stars. Just ask them to share their honest experience. Authentic reviews (even ones that mention small complaints) build more trust than a wall of perfect five-star reviews.

3. Show Up Consistently on the Platforms Your Customers Actually Use

You don't need to be on every social platform. You need to be on one that your customers use.

For dental practices and med spas: Instagram and Facebook work well. Post clear photos of your space, your team, and results (before-and-afters if relevant). You're not trying to go viral. You're showing new customers what they can expect.

For contractors and service businesses: Facebook and Google Local Services Ads work. Share photos of finished projects. Answer common questions in the comments.

What to do:

  • Pick one platform (probably Facebook if you're unsure)
  • Post once a week—a photo, a quick tip, an answer to a common question
  • Respond to comments and messages within 24 hours
  • This doesn't need to be polished. A phone photo of your team or a finished project is better than nothing

If you hate social media, don't force it. A well-maintained Google Business Profile alone will get you found.

What Actually Works (And What Doesn't)

Does work:

  • Google Business Profile (essential)
  • Honest customer reviews
  • A consistent phone number and address everywhere online
  • One social platform where you post occasionally

Doesn't work (or wastes money):

  • Paying for ads before your profile is filled out
  • Worrying about Instagram followers if your customers are on Facebook
  • Spending $500 on a logo redesign before you get reviews
  • Hiring someone to "manage" your online presence when you haven't claimed your own profile yet

Where to Start Today

Don't try to do everything. Pick one:

  1. Claim your Google Business Profile and fill it out completely (30 minutes)
  2. Ask your last five happy customers for Google reviews (10 minutes)
  3. Post one photo and one customer testimonial on Facebook (15 minutes)

Then pick another next week. This is not a one-time project. It's like sweeping—you do it regularly, not much each time.

If you get these three foundations in place, new customers will find you through Google search results before they find your competitor. That's the whole game.
